What they do know is the corium of the Elephant’s Foot is likely not as active as it was, and that it is cooling down on its own and will continue to cool. Roughly 80% of all residual radiation was emitted within 24 hours. The radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki today is on a par with the extremely low levels of background radiation (natural radioactivity) present anywhere on Earth. In ’86 the foot would have been fatal after 30 seconds of exposure even today, the radiation is fatal after 300 seconds. This allows CANDU to run on unenriched natural uranium, or uranium mixed with a wide variety of other materials such as plutonium and thorium. Heavy water’s extra neutron decreases its ability to absorb excess neutrons, resulting in a better neutron economy. Why can Candu reactors use natural uranium?ĬANDU replaces this light water with heavy water. This allows for the coolant to operate at higher temperatures and lower pressures than current reactorsimproving the efficiency and safety of the system. The sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) uses liquid metal (sodium) as a coolant instead of water that is typically used in U.S. Why is sodium used to cool nuclear reactors? Other coolants include heavy water, air, carbon dioxide, helium, liquid sodium, and a sodium-potassium alloy. The most commonly used coolant in the United States is water. Read More: What is Pell and Gregory classification? Is used as a coolant in high temperature nuclear reactor?Ī substance circulated through a nuclear reactor to remove or transfer heat. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the environment, with the deposition of radioactive materials in many parts of Europe. The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. About 27 tonnes of uranium around 18 million fuel pellets housed in over 50,000 fuel rods is required each year for a 1000 MWe pressurized water reactor. Once loaded, the fuel normally stays in the reactor core for several years. Why was iodine given after Chernobyl?Ĭhernobyl, the miniseries, insinuates that if people in the areas surrounding the catastrophic explosion had kept a supply of potassium iodide tablets on hand and taken them as soon as the disaster occurred, those tablets would have blocked radioactive iodine from flooding the thyroids of people in proximity to the … How much uranium is used in a nuclear reactor? This differs from a fuel element failure, which is not caused by high temperatures. How can a nuclear reactor core overheat?Ī core meltdown accident occurs when the heat generated by a nuclear reactor exceeds the heat removed by the cooling systems to the point where at least one nuclear fuel element exceeds its melting point. … The Elephant’s Foot will cool over time, but it will remain radioactive and (if you were able to touch it) warm for centuries to come. The corium of the Elephant’s Foot might not be as active as it was, but it’s still generating heat and still melting down into the base of Chernobyl. The VHTR can produce hydrogen from only heat and water by using thermochemical processes (such as the sulfur-iodine (S-I) process or the hybrid sulfur process), high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE), or from heat, water, and natural gas by applying the steam reformer technology. How does a very high temperature reactor work? The heat produced during nuclear fission in the reactor core is used to boil water into steam, which turns the blades of a steam turbine. A reactor core contains many fuel assemblies. For what is the heat of a nuclear reactor core used?Ī bundle of fuel rods, some with hundreds of rods, is called a fuel assembly. This can occur at lower temperatures if a eutectic uranium oxide-zirconium composition is formed. At 2,7002,800 C (4,8905,070 F) the uranium oxide fuel rods melt and the reactor core structure and geometry collapses. The same warning applies if you’re thinking of deleting an entire previous photo library. The looser your rules are, and the less you manually manage the list of duplicates before hitting the “Delete All” button, the greater the chance you’ll accidentally delete something worthwhile. It’s tempting to dump as much as possible when you’re presented with the opportunity to reclaim gigabytes of lost space by just hitting a button, but be sure you’ve given everything a look-over, first. Each app makes certain assumptions (with your guidance) as to what should be called a “duplicate.” You can make those assumptions strict, or loosen them to catch images that are extremely similar. That’s why lost photo recovery tools are almost as popular as duplicate removers.Įxercising caution when using duplicate photo tools can be challenging. Exercise Extreme Cautionīefore going any further in this How-To, read this carefully:īe very careful (yes, that’s bold, underline, and italics all at the same time) before deleting any of your “duplicate” photos, particularly in bulk. One of these libraries may be the only record you have of precious memories, and making the choice to just dump a giant collection of images can be calamitous. The duplicate eliminating tools below turn what could be days of agonizing hunting-and-pecking into a mostly automated hour or two of deleting unneeded images. If your libraries are this big, you have a lot of potential to recover hard drive space.īut even if your photo library is smaller, there’s a very good chance that there are duplicate images inside, swelling what could be a manageable collection into something needlessly bigger. GrandPerspective, the free disk space mapper I recommended last week, quickly shows just how out of control the photo libraries have become: my OS X Photos and Aperture libraries are the two huge blocks on the left, consuming 1/3 of all used space on the drive. I personally like to see disk information presented visually rather than mathematically. If you do the math relative to your hard drive’s size, you’ll understand how much photo libraries are weighing down your computer: they were consuming around 1/4 of my iMac’s 1TB of drive space. A window will pop up with a number, which in my Mac’s case was over 236GB between a number of different photo libraries - Apple’s Photo Booth, Aperture, iPhoto, and Photos, just to name a few. The simplest technique is to open a Finder window and right-click the Pictures folder under Favorites, choosing Get Info. If you’re not sure just how much space your photo collection is consuming on your Mac, there are two ways to figure it out. I’ve used both apps, as well as many others, and can help you choose the one that’s best for your needs… That’s an incredible amount of wasted space attributable to duplicates, so it’s no surprise that a $1 utility called Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro has recently become the #1 paid Mac App Store app, while a superior alternative called PhotoSweeper ($10) is in the top 50. After installing OS X 10.10.3, the new Photos app converted my 90GB Aperture library into a 126GB Photos library, and left both on my hard drive. Particularly after installing OS X 10.10.3 with Apple’s new Photos app, you might be surprised to learn that you’ve lost a lot of hard drive space, and that there are suddenly tons of duplicate photos on your Mac. Today’s How-To is focused on something very specific but with a lot of optimization potential: trimming down your Mac’s photo library. I’ve focused a lot over the last few months on helping readers to speed up and optimize Apple’s Macs - everything from adding RAM to recovering hard drive space and upgrading old hard drives to faster SSDs. The group has traditionally kept its operations private, but it has made its membership list public for many years. Skull and Bones are the oldest of numerous Yale campus secret organizations. The Tomb, which was constructed in 1856, was increased in 1903 and has subsequently been expanded. The Tomb, a massive brownstone structure in New Haven, serves as the society’s clubhouse. The year (322 BCE) of the death of the Greek orator Demosthenes is often regarded as a watershed moment in the shift of ancient Athens from democracy to plutocracy. The society’s insignia is a skull and crossbones with the number “322” beneath it. The Russell Trust Association was formed in 1856. The Eulogian Club was society’s initial name. According to some reports, Russell patterned the organization after European societies he met while studying in Germany. According to some sources, the organization was founded due to a disagreement over Phi Beta Kappa elections. William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft founded Skull & Bones in 1832. The Skull and Bones Society and the Bonesmen have long been the target of conspiracy theories due to society’s secrecy and exclusivity. Society’s initiation procedure has long been shrouded in mystery, leading many to assume that it involves occult activities, black magic, and even animal sacrifices. The Skull and Bones Society, with its strong members and strange rituals, has long been connected with dark conspiracy ideas.Īccording to legend, under cover of darkness in 1918, Yale student Prescott S. Among Bonesman’s notable clients are numerous presidents and modern-day power brokers. Alphonso Taft, future Secretary of War under President Grant and father of President William Howard Taft… who would also be a member of Skull and Bones, was a co-founder. Waveform plays well with most VSTs, so add away! That’s probably the way it was meant to be used anyway. As a long-time user of the DAW, that’s always a nice thing to see. These are a little “basic” so far as effects are concerned, but Tracktion has been continually updating these with user-friendly graphical interfaces that make them more usable. Tracktion or Waveform has always had some built-in effects (like EQ, reverb, delay, and so on). That said, Waveform is somewhat customizable (if you upgrade to PRO, you can do more customization). How the controls are positioned are part of the workflow, so that’s going to come down to preference. It’s dark themed, which can make it a little easier on the eyes during long studio sessions. Waveform’s graphical user interface is attractive if simple. It feels like software that’s been developed to be software. Because Waveform doesn’t feel like a piece of software trying to emulate hardware. If the workflow isn’t for you, that’s okay, there are other more traditional DAWs on this list you will likely find a lot of utility in. It makes it easy for me to get started, get going, and take my project idea from start to finish quickly. What I like most about the DAW, and what some might find odd, is the workflow. Over the years, I’ve recorded acoustic duos, reggae bands, rock bands, podcasts, audiobooks, and other projects using Waveform. And while some might try to tell you that it’s best for electronic music and EDM (and it is good for that), you can honestly do anything with it. What this means is that Waveform has had plenty of time to mature. At the time, Tracktion software was owned by Mackie. Waveform was originally Tracktion, and Tracktion was a DAW all its own before it became a developer. Waveform Free is one of my personal favorites and is easily one of our top picks for this list.
